On the Couch with Susan Schwartz

Diagnosis in Psychology
4

In this episode of the podcast I am speaking with Susan Schwartz PhD about Diagnosis in Psychology. Amongst other things we talk about the beauty of analytical work in its ‘depth’, it’s symbolism and search for meaning, along with the mutual exploration together in ‘depth’. And about how psychology as it is often practiced has been reduced to what is the diagnosis? To where is the pathology? And how psychology might have lost its soul, or the beauty of the ‘psyche’ in that reduction. We also talk about Jung, Hillman, people’s nervousness about the outer world, puer/puella, narcissism and creativity.

Susan E. Schwartz, Ph.D. is a Jungian analyst educated in Zurich, Switzerland and is a licensed clinical psychologist. For many years Susan has been giving workshops and presentations at numerous organizations, and lectures worldwide on various aspects of Jungian analytical psychology. She has written several journal articles and book chapters on daughters and fathers, Puella, and Sylvia Plath. Susan maintains a private practice in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Her latest book is A Jungian Exploration of the Puella Archetype: Girl Unfolding.
